School Administrators have asked that parents be aware when your student returns to school they want you to know they have computer use policies in place.
School’s are abiding by CIPA (Computer Internet Protect Act) that was enacted in 2000 by Congress, and, therefore, certify they have internet protection policies in place. This includes internet filters and blocks to protect kids from obscene pictures, inappropriate content and child pornography.
Schools are required to enforce a policy to monitor the online activities of minors. To that end, if your children are in school and they are accessing the internet by the school’s computers, there are very strict guidelines in which they are to follow.
Please make sure your kids understand school computers are not to be used for checking out MySpace, Facebook, gaming sites, video sites, chat rooms or worse. These types of web applications are in violation of the school’s Internet Safety Policy.
Please check your school’s website for their policies on computer use, in your particular State and School District.
Students are hacking into school’s computers by researching at home to bypass the schools filters and blocks. Check to see if this is a direct violation of your school's computer use policies. These policies vary from state-to-state.
Schools want parents of students to explain to their kids using the school’s computers is not a right it is a privilege and violation of their policies will result in cancellation of those privileges. Furthermore, serious improper uses could result in suspension and may be subject to disciplinary action.
Schools are stressing they monitor and block inappropriate sites that are not intended for furthering education and assisting students in school. They want to encourage parents to teach their children to make the right choices. Chose the right resources at school, not because they are forced to, but because it is right thing to do.
Schools want parents to monitor their kids at home so that students understand that searching at home to do the wrong thing is not acceptable at school.
